This unit is exciting because it will be combining several of my favorite elements - student collaboration and choice. Today we started with Ms. Haufschild's second graders who are creating a fairytale and have already selected their tale and character partnering with Ms. Heiser's fifth graders who will be co-creating and mentoring.
Using the Morphi app, one member of the team drew the main character and one member drew the enemy. They will be 3D printed for the students to design using sharpie markers on Wednesday. The next step will be bringing the story to life using Bloxels, Puppet Pals, Stop motion, or another idea.
This week was snowflake symmetry in our fourth grade classrooms at Stoner Prairie and Country View. Now the 3D printer prints nonstop snowflakes with clear glitter filament. This lesson I wrote for Thingiverse Education and now was able to teach in 4 different classrooms with one more to go. What a wonderful activity to integrate technology and math!

Our first graders have been doing research about what insects are and what they need to survive. Last week and today they took their art sketches of their selected insect and transferred it to a digital medium through the Morphi 3D app. Below is the tutorial that I used with our students to introduce them to Morphi and designing their insect.
After designing 3 versions of their insect, students selected between glow in the dark green or blue for the filament of their insects to be printed on our 3D printers. Soon the insects who have come to life will find a home in their habitats created in art class. Check out the complete lesson at www.thingiverse.com/thing:1677342
What is DENSI? Discovery Educator Network Summer Institute is my "teacher" camp where if I am selected, I get to spend a week with 150 educators from the U.S.A., Canada, UK, and now several other countries learning and discovery about different uses of technology as well as other amazing ideas. Last year I learned about BreakOut Edu and this year I hope to learn even more.
Presentation - Coding Beyond Code.org
This year I will be presenting with another fabulous DEN member LeaAnne Daughrity about coding on Wednesday. Our session will be very hands-on and a nice complement to the following day of the DEN Maker Playground. Below are screen shots of the website that we will be using.
DEN Maker Playground
This year I am working on the DEN Maker Playground for our unconference day on Thursday. I have been reaching out to companies to get promotional products and also to arrange hangouts where educators can talk to the people who are designing and using the product. I am really looking forward to making this happen.
I've created table flyers with QR codes for people to learn more about the product but also contribute to a shared padlet of ideas.
Access Through Technology (3D Printing)
We even had a young man comment that with the 3D modified Rubik's cube it was easier to solve for him. Check it out!
Below I tried to capture the introduction of the lesson.
This week one of our second graders used Morphi to create her own drawn design. She drew on the iPad in the Morphi app to create her own special design. After she was finished she emailed me her finished .stl for our 3D printer.
Meet Morphi .... an app that will change how you and your students design for your 3D printer. This app is free with a school volume discount option for even more resources. I love Tinkercad but it doesn't work on our iPads. Morphi is very much like Tinkercad in the features that the students have access to. Check out theirtutorial videos.
