Our Bambu X1C Printer Journey

5/28/2023

About a month ago, our Bambu X1C printer arrived.  Here is the first part of our journey.

Arrival and Unpacking

Two of my designers unboxed and assembled the printer during the day while I was teaching.  It was amazing to watch the ease that they worked together and solved different questions that they each had while assembling the printer.  They were very compatible in that one designer was quick to try different ideas while the other designer was quick to read and check what was working or not working in their combined method.

The printer hit a snafu with our internet so instead the two designers used the preloaded designs to try the printer.  The first two prints failed.

Our First Prints

After our tech team was able to open our internet to connect our printer, Fabian quickly started learning the software and how to use multiple colors.  Here is his first benchy which took almost 17 hours and left a lot of "filament poop".

When the printer switches colored filament, it creates a small spiral of combined color filament called poop that is released through a section in the back which needs to be collected.  We are now collecting filament poop that I hope to use in a creative repurposing project.

My First Design

My first print for our school was this combination of two different Thingiverse files combined on Tinkercad and with added words to our school Euchre tournament between teachers.

I was able to learn how to mash up different stls as well as select color changes using the slicer software.

The print took 6 hours and for the most part was a success.  The letters had to be repaired with hot glue because of the removal of supports and the fragility of the letters.

Last week was a perfect time to try new materials on the Glowforge to design.  The project called Design for a Loved One gave designers the choice to use $5 of their Design on a Budget money to create either a bamboo candle holder or leather key fob.

Check out the tutorial videos as well as the final projects that were created.

The "Why" Behind Mentoring (MS to EL)

5/11/2023

These last few weeks have been a serious struggle for me.  At times I feel like what I could do and what I am doing are so far misaligned that I become frustrated and question what I do.  I am not always able to see what is working when it feels like everything is not working.

In 2021, I started reaching out to my colleagues from my former elementary school because I wanted to continue to build on the technology experiences that I had been doing in my previous role as an Educational Technology Coach at K-5.  I wanted to continue to collaborate and learn with educators who had trusted me to work with their students when sometimes I didn't know what I was doing.

Our first mentoring with 7th or 8th grade and kindergartners started in the spring of 2021 when we still needed to sit 6 feet apart.  Using yoga rugs and meeting outside, the kindergarten team was willing to work with me and provide my 7th and 8th graders the opportunity to mentor.  This was the start of the mentoring program that our 7th and 8th grade technology students do for our K-5 school.

In the past year, the Infysys Maker grant helped immensely to provide more technology like the Glowforge.  While our local Verona Area Educational Foundation provided two different grants to help cover the cost of 3D printing, Infusible Ink, and more.  This year we have been continuing to work through both the highs and the lows because when older learners and younger learners connect magic can happen.

Sometimes I've had to slow down and just watch what is happening instead of what I think should be happening.  Today was one of those days.... a 7th grade group that has been struggling transformed into the most amazing group of thoughtful and caring mentors.  To be able to see the connections and the impact that both the older and younger learner are having on each other's life is truly the "why" of mentoring.

Thank you to Jessica Reed for capturing these moments today and always being willing to navigate this crazy path of collaboration!

So week 2 of testing bubble wands in the Design Process of L-Look, Listen, and Learn and A-Ask Tons of Questions was challenged with the weather.

Two of our three classes were able to do the next part of our mentoring which is testing different bubble wands both commercially produced and produced with our 3D printers to see what worked best or was preferred by the user.

Mentoring in 3D Design with Kinder

This week was our first week of the start of our bubble wand 3D design mentoring with our kindergarten buddies.

Both 7th and 8th grade are fortunate enough to have a class of kindergartners who we have the pleasure of working with.

This week was the get to know you activity using Flip to create a video together about themselves, what they like, and more.
In this mentoring, mentors were paired together and then worked as a team with 2-3 kindergartners.  This has helped with the anxiety that many of my mentors experience at first when starting to work with a younger buddy.

Coming next week.....

This project has become one of my favorite units because it is the culmination of a 9 week course focused on understanding through identity, culture, stereotypes, representation, resistance and activism, allyship and justice, and designing to make a difference

Designers used Makers Empire to learn about creating to make a difference and then designs were made on the Glowforge to fundraise for our local community organizations like Dane County Humane Society and Badger Needs Network.

I choose to use the Challenge Central lesson from Makers Empire as part of the framework to do the Design Thinking Project with a focus on our community.

Creative Robotics with Hummingbird (Gr. 8)

3/24/2023

This unit integrating creative robotics using the Hummingbird and Micro:Bit has been by far my favorite unit.  Last summer I learned about both the Micro:Bit and Hummingbird through Pathfinders with CodeJoy.  It was the highlight of my summer learning and making.

It is scary to integrate new technology that I am not completely a master of, but over the last few years I have learned how to trust the design process and find resources that will propel my designers forward in their discoveries.  With Hummingbird and Micro:Bit, the resources that have been developed for me as an educator have easily translated into the classroom.

I relied heavily on the tutorials that Kelsey and Matt developed.  Almost all of them are now Edpuzzles for my designers to use as they follow a similar learning journey.
Picture
I have blogged on previous parts of this unit - Hummingbird Posts.  Watching my designers engage in creative robotics using simple tools like cardboard and creating amazing robots with the integration of servos, LEDs, and sensors, has been the missing part in my curriculum.  I don't want my designers to just program robots, I want them to create from the beginning to the end.

In the Simple Robots Flip, you can see how designers started with iterations that quickly evolved.  The designers then took their designs and shared them with their fifth grade partners.  Several groups even had their partners add to their design.  This unit has reinforced my belief that computer science and making are powerful tools for unleashing creativity at any age.

This past week was the start of our community advocacy project make a difference design challenge for YEJJ.  Using the Makers Empire Design Challenge course of Making a Difference, designers learn and brainstorm about how to create a positive impact in our community through advocacy.

Teams pick a focus charity and then design to fundraise for their charity using the resources that we have in the classroom like the Glowforge and 3D printers.
Each designer keeps their original prototype before teams select the final designs that they will create and sell.

Week 6 - Trombone Shorty is one of my favorite grade 6 technology units because integrating music and technology is so much fun!

Trombone Shorty (click to see previous post) is the perfect Design Thinking Story to bridge into the use of the Ozobots, Makey Makey, Garageband, and the Micro:Bit.
Picture
The Tech Music mixtape (click on the picture above) captures just a little of the amazing diversity of how music and technology blend to create powerful creation opportunities for our designers.

I love using the Mixtapes with Flip because it allows designers to share with each other and enjoy the diversity of how music is created.

My favorite design challenge of this week is the Micro:Bit recycled cardboard instrument.  Designers really take this challenge to another level with their ability to incorporate different recycled materials and programming the Micro:Bit to play a song that they have designed.

3D Printer Certification

3/21/2023

This past fall while visiting Lee Briggs classroom at Toki Middle School in Madison, Wisconsin, I was inspired by how he had created different learning certifications for the tools he has in his classroom.  It took me several months and some great shared resources to create my own version for our 3D printers.
I designed the certification using resources from bit.ly/3dprintingfun by Joe Cipfl along with tutorials that I had developed for our 3D printing curriculum at 7th grade.

Joe's slides allowed me to build a solid understanding of how the 3D printer works and I divided them into 5 minute or less Edpuzzle videos to explain fundmentals, basic vocabulary, and preparing files for print.
Picture
I also focused on four design programs that we use - Tinkercad, Cookiecad, Morphi, and Makers Empire so that designers would learn how to create and not just find and print other designer files.  The certification consists of ten 5 minute or less videos.  Upon completion of the certification, designers earn $10 towards their design budget for our classroom.

This week designers explored the four different sensors in their Hummingbird Robotics kit.  Using Kelsey and Matt's tutorials, designers learned about how to use the different sensors.

After designers learned about the different types of sensors and explored using them, they were given a Sensor Design Challenge.

Designers really invested in some unique designs to meet the criteria of the design challenge.  Check out the mixtape below to see some of the amazing uses of the Hummingbird Robotics kit.
