It was definitely a challenge but powerful for teams to see how what they write is interpreted.

This week students in Ms. Magnus's class started to focus on the important characteristics of a hermit crab shell in the quest to create a suitable shell for the hermit crabs in the classroom. On Monday, students were encouraged to think like a hermit crab and sort the shells based on what they would want to live in. In Makers Empire, they tried to create spirals.
Today students were put in teams of three where each person had a different design role - physical design with Model Magic, scribe of the directions to create the design, and virtual design in Makers Empire. This is the trial run with Monday of next week being the full design cycle which will be tested solely through the use of the written directions by another team on Wednesday.
This week in Ms. Magnus's class we dove a little deeper into our investigation into hermit crabs, shelter, and 3D design. We looked at shells, described shells, watched videos about hermit crabs, and played with Makers Empire to prepare for the upcoming challenge of creating our own shell for our hermit crabs.
Week 1 of our project started with brainstorming what we know and need to know about hermit crab shelters. Students also explored Makers Empire and did the snowman challenge.
Using the donations from the Fitchburg Block Party, we are able to purchase Makers Empire until May of 2019 for all of our students to create and design. My next step is to start connecting this amazing software to lessons that we are already teaching and with the lesson library, this will be super powerful.
Noticings - Student designs aren't always showing up on the dashboard so I marked some students as not having completed an activity only to have them show me on their device that it was in their gallery and completed. The keyboard tends to freeze up the app which causes design loss.
You know that moment where the high of trying something new.... hits the reality of what students do with it? That moment when you look a little deeper and realize that not everything is going as well as you think it is?
This happened to me on Friday evening. As I looked at the Teacher Dashboard I marveled at the amount of designs that students already had after only 40 minutes of design time.
