Bloxels has been a very powerful engaging tool for our learners. The following two videos are examples of students who chose an area of interest, researched, and created a video game in Bloxels to share about their interest.
Here I go again.... telling you how fortunate I am to work with such amazing teachers. Two of my favorite teachers - Ms. Magnus and Ms. Murphy wanted to connect a literacy unit with technology so here is Day 1.
Day 1: Tools, Choices, and Beginning
Access Through Technology (3D Printing)
We even had a young man comment that with the 3D modified Rubik's cube it was easier to solve for him. Check it out!
Day 3 - Creating Our Games
For the last two days, students have created and started to experience challenges with creating their own video game. Even though some students were able to figure out different aspects, it became obvious that we needed to look at one of the tutorials together. We could have watched this tutorial earlier but on Day 3 it helped everyone and gave students time to try on their own. Sometimes having a tutorial at the beginning of a unit prevents students from trying and failing or is too much information.
Day 3 - Visitors
Day 3 also brought visitors from the Wisconsin State Journal. Our students will be presenting at the Madison Mini Maker Faire on Saturday, May 14. They will be featured in an article on Tuesday about this event.
Showing teams the use of the ? and link to online tutorial videos helps remove the misconception that the teacher is the expert and has all of the answers.
Task 3 - Sharing
Today we found that the frustration point started to occur about 40 minutes into the learning. My goal is for teams to want more, not hit total frustration. Frustration and failure are part of the design process and need to occur but knowing when to wrap up is essential. Teams shared what they had learned with other teams in small groups to prepare for the next creation day.
