New River Gorge Bridge
Day 4 of STEAM in the Park started with an early breakfast so that we could take a bus ride to the New River Gorge Bridge. I was the lucky one who got to sit in the back and experience the joy of school bus bumps. After safely arriving, we were divided into groups to be geared up for the bridge walk. I really enjoyed both the information that was shared about the construction of the bridge but also the beautiful views. Each year there is a bridge jump which is why there are numbers painted on the walk to help participants know the distance to the gorge. | |
Thurmond, WV
After the bridge walk, we visited the historic town of Thurmond, WV. We learned about the history of the town and the surrounding area as well as learned a little more about the impact of coal in the area. After our tour, we took the time to reflect on our impact through a journaling activity. I was a tad more fascinated by the railroad construction crew who were fixing some of the tracks. I think they did appreciate my fascination as they repaired the tracks. |
