The last two weeks of YEJJ, activist organized into teams focused on topics in their community and how to improve situations for homeless, cancer fighters, and animals.
Using the Design Thinking Process - LAUNCH, teams engaged in researching, planning, and adapting their ideas to help make a difference in their community. Below are some reflections of the process... though very little money was raised due to the quick timeline, teams learned valuable lessons in planning, creating, and adapting ideas. |

This Friday was the first time that our 8th grade designers started to mentor Ms. Moll's third grade students in 3D Design and Printing. They learned about each other, shared a 3D video, and helped their partner log in to Makers Empire.
3D Design and Printing Unit
For the last few weeks, designers in our 3D Design and Build class have been learning about the world of 3D design and printing. Using Wakelet, my students accessed videos about 3D Printing in Our World, 3D Communities, and 3D Printing for a Purpose. In the first printing rotation, they found a print in 3D Communities that they wanted to print where they learned how to slice and use the printer.
In the second printing rotation, they learned how to use Makers Empire, Morphi EDU, and Tinkercad to create a print that serves a purpose in our school, home, or community. Currently they are in the process of iterating their designs using the Design Thinking Process. CS Problem Solving Unit Mastery CheckStudent MaterialsWeek 1
Week 2
Week 3 and 4TuesdayWednesdayThursdayFridayOur district is lucky to have an Apple Distinguished Educator - Rita Mortenson. This year Rita found a way for my 8th grade students to participate in an experience like no other. Weekly my two groups of 8th graders were mentored by Apple Interns who shared their process of developing an app and helping my students go through the same process. Here is our experience.... Week 1 - BrainstormUsing a keynote presentation created by Apple, my designers started to learn about the importance of brainstorming and researching ideas. Key questions that the mentors highlighted - What problem is your app solving? How is it impacting the community? What will be the user experience? Week 2 - PlanIn week 2, my designers shared their ideas and brainstorms through Zoom to their Apple Mentors - Marian, Alaina, Anjani, Lauryn, Megan, Fayo, and Amarah. Their mentors talked about knowing who their app's top competitor is currently. They shared about user triggers, actions, features, and inclusion. Using Keynote, designers created a mock up for iPhone dimensions. Week 3 - Creating a PrototypeDuring this session designers shared their initial ideas with their Apple Mentors who gave them feedback about color choices, design features, and more. Week 4 - Evaluate and ShareIn this zoom session, designers shared their prototypes and process with an invited audience. It was so impressive to hear each team share what they did and why they did it. Student Reflections and Mastery CheckIn previous posts, I have always started with the beginning of the process but the Modern Classroom Project is really about backwards design. So let me start with where we ended and how we got there for this unit.

This semester, I tried a different approach using Modern Classroom's mastery and pacing approach with my designers for their Design Thinking Project. Using Canvas, learning modules with Edpuzzles were released as teams or individual designers progressed through the stages of their Design Thinking Project. This video shows just a little snapshot into one designer's process this quarter. Here is an example of what one of our 8th grade designers created this quarter in their Design Thinking Project. I have the pleasure of highlighting some amazing designs from different teams of eighth grade designers from Semester 1 Design Thinking Projects. The following design was created completely online in a collaborative breakout room over several weeks. Elicia and Ava share their process and a little glimpse of the three games that they created for Avian Adventures using Bloxels. Avian Adventures Bloxels Preview |
